Katika, a “food distributor” who passed away recently, was commemorated at a charity event in Debrecen

Local News

The Debrecen Women’s Public Association of Unsolicited Attention once again invited the poor living in the city, the families working from public work, the retirees, and those living without a shelter to visit Petőfi Square. At the free food distribution, a bowl of hot lunch and fresh bread awaited those in need. The menu, as previously voted by guests, was stuffed cabbage.

On Sunday, food will be distributed again in Debrecen, Petőfi Square

“This food distribution in Debrecen was a little different than the previous ones. With a short speech, a minute of silence, and a bowed head, we remembered our friend, our food distribution partner, Ferencné Varga, who was known as the “food distributor” Katika. Relatives of Katika, members of the grieving family, were also present at the commemoration.

The departure of Katika is also a huge loss to our family and our community. In his person, a man left us here who helped the poor and the fallen all his life. Until his retirement, he worked in the social field, he was the one who could always count on those who did not have a place on the sunny side of life.

For more than a decade, as a member of our non-governmental organization, on the last Sunday of every month, she distributed food to those in need in Debrecen. Everyone had a kind word, he knew it was better to give than to receive. After his retirement, he took on more charitable work because he believed in the power of love, goodness.

At the end of November last year, she was still standing in Petőfi Square, and as usual, she distributed the food to those in a long line. Even in our worst dreams, we didn’t think we could be with us anymore in two days.

She couldn’t be with us at Christmas last year because of her illness. But we all believed she would triumph over the virus and we could be with her again in a few months.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t. Katika closed her eyes forever. We who are left are just looking at ourselves in shock. We feel a great emptiness, an irreparable loss, the unthinkable has happened.

If there is a country up there, Katika will surely distribute food to the poor and send us the strength not to give up. We who were friends with a sore heart continue.

After the main drive before her memory, her family also stayed there, helping to distribute food, taking over Katika’s legacy. It was touching to see, with teary eyes, real humanity helping those in line get food.

Our small team will continue to be waiting for all our neighbors who need help on the last Sunday of every month.

We call anyone who wants to help, with both hands or financial support. Next time, on February 27, we are waiting for our fellow human beings from Debrecen living in poor financial conditions.

We know not much we can give, but we do it all with a good heart. We would like more people to stand by us, even to do manual work for the benefit of the most deprived in Hungarian society.

Here in our region, too, many thousands are waiting for the helping hand, the human word, they want to live a life worthy of a human being. We call anyone who wants to help, with both hands or financial support.

We are also waiting for donations from the residents of Debrecen, especially long-term food, fruit and potatoes.
